The Emmi Pet is a German-made ultrasonic toothbrush, it is completely silent, non-vibrating and non-invasive. You simply apply the special toothpaste and water to the brush head, then hold it on the dog's teeth for a minimum of 10 seconds. The ultrasound waves, toothpaste and water work together to break down tartar and plaque and kill bacteria.
This is a wonderful alternative to sedation for dental care. We recommend one 30-minute session per week and a maximum of 2 sessions. This keeps the stress at a minimum for your dog and allows the gums to heal in the week between appointments. Dogs' gums that are damaged and sensitive from the bacteria build-up can bleed easily. Obviously, we don't want this and that is why a 30-minute session once a week allows the gums time to strengthen and heal.
Which dogs can have the Emmi Pet dental care…?
Dogs can have this treatment at any age, the sooner the better if possible. As soon as any staining is noticeable it's time to start using the Emmi Pet. The less build-up visible on the teeth – the less time it will take to remove, then all that's needed is a quick 5-10 minute session when your dog is in for a groom (If your dog visits the groomer every couple of months) to maintain pearly white healthy teeth.
Some older dogs or dogs prone to dental issues may have a severe build-up of tartar. If this is the case then it is likely that your dog will need to see a vet before they start Emmi Pet sessions. We are groomers, not veterinarians so it's always better to seek their professional advice before coming to us. We will suggest that a vet be seen if we feel that your dog's teeth are beyond our help. We do offer dental care to dogs with severely bad teeth, but as a means to 'sterilise' the mouth only, this kills the bacteria in their gums to help prevent the amount they are ingesting on a weekly basis. This is usually done in the waiting time before a veterinarian's dental treatment.
How to desensitise your dog to a toothbrush?
This is simple if you start from a puppy, similar to getting them used to the sound of a hoover, traffic or a brush, the key is to start when they are very young. Get a small toothbrush and pop it in their mouth for a couple of seconds, then reward them, do this a couple of times per week to start with at the same time each day. When they get used to the routine, try and extend the time a little, when they are ok with that, try and reward them only when they don't chew the brush and use a command like wait as you hold the brush on their teeth, no need to scrub or move the brush, just hold it on a tooth and just go round each tooth in turn. It could take a few weeks for the pup to get used to it, but once they are it makes using the Emmi Pet far less stressful as 'brushing' is already a part of your dog's routine.
